Besides the animals you are most interested in, please tell us which other animals you might be interested in.

The remaining application process takes approximately 20 minutes and is designed to help you find the best match for you. You will typically receive a response within 3-5 days, and approved applicants are expected to take their pet home within two weeks. Please do not let any delay in response diminish our sincere gratitude for adopting a rescued animal through us. We are primarily run by volunteers, most of whom work full-time, so we apologize in advance for any potential delays.

Have you applied for boarding or adopted an animal elsewhere? If so, please describe the current situation of the organization and whether CDCK and the dog you choose are your first choice.

We welcome adopters who rent, or live in an apartment or condo. We want to alert you that some landlords and management companies have size and breed restrictions, limits on number of pets, and/or require pet deposits or additional fees. Please indicate if you've considered these when adopting a pet.

What qualities do you value in an animal (please see all related content)? Please note: Young pets almost always have moderate to high energy levels. Senior pets are generally gentler and less energetic. If you want a gentle pet, we will not continue to recommend young pets.

Most pets need to potty rest at least every six hours (more frequently for puppies). How many hours will your pet be left alone on weekdays? Where will your pet stay when you're not home (e.g., in a crate, free to roam)? If you're frequently out for more than 6 hours a day, how will you ensure your pet gets a midday nap?

Below is a list of behaviors and training needs commonly exhibited by pets that have never received formal training. Some of these behaviors or training needs may appear weeks or months after adoption but can be addressed through positive reinforcement training. Please select the behaviors you would be willing to train to achieve. For families with children under 14, please think carefully before answering this question, as pets that have never received formal training, especially young pets, are more likely to exhibit jumping and biting behaviors.

What behaviors (e.g., separation anxiety, aggression) or living conditions (e.g., divorce, unemployment, moving, children, allergies, illness) in your pet would make you feel unable to continue caring for it?

Approximately 30% of pets test positive for heartworm because they have never received monthly preventative care before rescue. Heartworm is a treatable, non-contagious disease (it is caused by mosquito bites). Treatment may be administered after adoption and requires two consecutive injections, during which the pet's activity is very limited. Before treatment, heartworm-positive pets should not engage in activities that significantly increase heart rate for extended periods. After adoption, CDCK will work with you to provide the necessary treatment through one of our treatment partners. If treatment is provided through one of our partners, CDCK will cover all heartworm injection costs. Adopters are responsible for transporting their adopted pet to and from all treatment centers. Adopters may choose to have their pet treated at other facilities, in which case City Dogs and City Kitties will cover $450 of the treatment costs. Would you be willing to adopt a pet with special needs (e.g., seizures controlled by medication, post-operative recovery, deafness)?

Owning a pet is an investment of your time and money, averaging around $1,500 per year. Are you confident in providing your new pet with annual and emergency medical care, grooming, a balanced diet, shelter, and exercise?

I have read the questions in this application carefully and have filled out this application honestly. I understand that any omission of information and/or failure to answer all applicable questions can result in this application being declined. If an omission or untruth is discovered after an adoption takes place, I understand that CDCK reserves the right to annul the adoption and reclaim the animal.

I confirm this is an accurate statement: I have had no offenses related to animal abuse or neglect: I, and no one in my current household, have ever been convicted of any form of animal abuse, neglect, or abandonment.

Adoption fee: I understand that there is an adoption fee of $1.00 (unless otherwise noted) to help offset shelter, transport, veterinary and care costs.

Our process: We screen all applications to determine the best environment we believe for a particular animal. If your application is not approved, or if it is not a good fit for our organization, you will be notified by email. The typical response time is about one week. Our messages are often sent to your spam or junk mail folder; please check that folder if you haven't received a contact yet. Please do not mistake a lack of response for City Dogs Rescue believing you cannot provide a loving home for your dog. Please understand that your dog may have already started the application process, but it may not yet be listed on our website.

Adoption Decision: I understand that CDCK has the right to determine the best home for each animal. I understand that adoption decisions depend on a variety of factors, including but not limited to the compatibility of each family with each available animal's lifestyle and home environment, as well as the quality and quantity of other applications received for each animal. I understand that there are many reasons why a suitable animal may not ultimately be found, and I should not interpret any decision or lack of response as CDCK believing that I am unable to provide a loving home for the dog.
